GAO URGES PROTECTION STANDARDS FOR FEDS

The Interagency Security Committee should set performance standards for measuring federal government facility protection, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Agencies have detailed, government-wide guidance for using performance measures for information technology security, GAO found, but no standard way to evaluate whether their security measures reduce facilities` vulnerability to terrorism. ISC, which is chaired by DHS and is responsible for coordinating federal agencies` facility protection, is already positioned to produce government-wide standards.

The Project on Government Oversight (POGO) has written House and Senate Appropriations Committee members demanding that they stop DHS from classifying records as "Sensitive Security Information" to cover up embarrassing details.
